RENEWED SPIRITS WELCOMES YOU

WHO WE ARE

Our Roots

Renewed Spirits, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, began over ten years ago when an abused horse was rescued. Realizing that horses, like people, need purpose, equine-assisted therapy was chosen as the method to utilize the rescued horses. As more horses were rescued, it became apparent that equine-assisted therapy was not available in Alabama. Renewed Spirits was founded in 2019 to provide quality mental health, personal growth, and educational resources to under-served individuals in the Shoals area, with the use of horses.

The mission of Renewed Spirits is to offer therapy, using primarily equine-assisted activities to under-served clients with various physical, cognitive and emotional issues, and provide them with the opportunity to experience wellness, enhance life skills, and discover purpose.

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing)

EMDR has been described as a physiologically based therapy that helps a person see disturbing material in a new

and less distressing way.

 â€‹

The mind can often heal itself naturally, in the same way as the body does. Much of this natural coping mechanism occurs during sleep, particularly during rapid eye movement (REM) sleep.

Psychologist Francine Shapiro developed Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) in 1987, utilizing this natural process in order to successfully treat

Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Since then, EMDR has been used to effectively treat a wide range of mental health problems.

Ask a therapist for more information about EMDR to see if it is right for you.

Play Therapy

Children are referred for play therapy to resolve their problems (Carmichael; 2006; Schaefer, 1993).

Often, children have used up their own problem solving tools, and they misbehave, may act out at home, with friends, and at school (Landreth, 2002).

Play therapy allows trained mental health practitioners who specialize in play therapy, to assess and understand children's play.

Further, play therapy is utilized to help children cope with difficult emotions and find solutions to problems (Moustakas, 1997; Reddy, Files-Hall, & Schaefer, 2005).

By confronting problems in the therapy setting, children find healthier solutions.

Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT)

Thoughts and feelings can and do influence behavior. Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) has been proven to be successful in treating phobias, addictions, anxiety, and depression.

CBT is what many think of when they consider counseling. It's what you might call "traditional talk therapy."

Clients are able to learn how to  become more aware of their negative thoughts and negative interpretations of those thoughts. Then, they are better able to develop alternate ways of thinking, as well as, behaving which can greatly reduce stress.

Renewed Warriors

Veterans Program

flag.jpg

Are you a Veteran who struggles with Post Traumatic Stress (PTS)? Do you love a veteran who is struggling with Post Traumatic Stress?

PTS can be hard to talk about, and drug therapy can often feel like a bandaid. Let's face it - PTS can make a person feel... well, broken. But, in reality, you're stuck... not broken. If you are battling, we hope you'll reach out to us.

This program is FREE!

We are currently recruiting Veterans for our Equine Assisted Therapy group. Call 256.320.4200 for more information, or use the link below to register for our next session. The horses are very good at helping, but you have to be in their presence for it to work.

Renewed Warriors is a 6 week program designed to allow you to learn about Post Traumatic Stress --or anything else that you may be struggling with-- and find your best way of moving through moments that may be challenging your day-to-day life.

Sessions are held either out in the pasture or in an open arena -- not surrounded by four walls in an office.

You didn't serve alone. You don't have to fight Post Traumatic Stress alone. It's treatable.
